Wade are fully eroded before our very eyes, fulfilling the wet dream of generations of conservatives, things may quickly go from catastrophic to nightmarish. Mitch McConnell, Republican Senate leader and all around sicko, gave us a glimpse at the future battlefields of a post-Roe America: a total, national, ban on abortion.
Obviously, if Republicans win back congress in 2022 (which seems fairly likely) Biden will still be in the White House, and legislation like Mitch suggested would be dead on arrival. This won’t be a stable state of affairs, however. A Republican congress could turn abortion into Obamacare, and vote 500 times to enact a federal ban: setting them up to fulfill these desires if/when they take the presidency in 2024.
Democrats would need another one of them “big blue wave” elections this year, and again in 2024 to avoid this extremely grim future. Structurally, this type of victory is less and less possible due to voting restrictions and a gerrymandered Senate that gives a huge amount of power to states 20% the size of Staten Island.
