8:18Now PlayingHow was the city of Minneapolis changed by the 2020 reckonings with racism and policing? The George Floyd protests, as well as the ongoing and all too frequent murder of Black and Brown folks at the hands of law enforcement, has forced cities and town acorss the country to take a hard look at their relationships with police.
In many communities reactionary pro-police bills are popping up across the country, even as a record number of people protested against those exact policies and the harmful outcomes that WE KNOW these systems produce and reinforce. Instead of listening to the record number of pro-justice protests, police and cities have fallen back into “tough on crime” rhetoric that lead to the current conditions. There has been little acknowledgment on a national level of the demands of the massive movement that emerged in the wake of George Floyd’s murder.
Even now, President Biden and other Democrats have continued to harp on the topic of “Defund” or “Abolish the Police,” but only as a means of attacking the left. Biden wants more money to flow in police coffers, despite overwhelming evidence against this policy, and Nancy Pelosi seems determined to remind everyone that Democrats are not pro “defund” even after everyone has moved on from that conversation. Elite Democrats lingering on this issue only hurts the people that Democrats tell “vote blue no matter who” to every election cycle.
