Dobbs V Jackson, the recent Supreme Court case that stripped away the right to choose for millions of Americans, has already dramatically changed conditions on the ground for healthcare providers, especially in places with so called “trigger laws” (which banned abortion immediately after this case was ruled on). So what does it look like for the people who have been doing the incredibly necessary work of helping people access abortions in places where it was already hard to do so?
According to this week’s guest on the Bitchuation Room, Laurie Bertram Roberts, the Executive Director of the Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund, clinic workers are having to reevaluate all of their services from the ground up to ensure that they comply with the dated and archaic laws that governor abortion before Roe. Some funds are waiting to see how they can continue to operate in their own states, others are picking up shop and moving to states where they can continue their mission unabated. Still others are staying put and trying to offer non-abortion but still vital service.
This new era means that not only are the folks who are coming into these clinics at risk of being prosecuted and jailed for seeking healthcare, but the workers providing healthcare are themselves at great risk of being jailed or worse.
