The feeling of waking up every day and not knowing what fundamental rights they’ll strip away next is such a fresh and exciting way to live. This season at SCOTUS, we lost the ability for regulators to regulate polluters (for the most part)--which guts the basic function of the administrative state–as well as the fundamental right to privacy, healthcare, and bodily autonomy.
So what’s next on the docket? By the looks of things, the Supreme Court, a theocratic council of unelected originalist sages, is now poised to roll back federal election oversight–essentially giving the green light to voter suppression and manipulation in every Republican state that almost didn’t certify the 2020 election and has been waiting to restrict the franchise again since poll taxes and literacy tests were declared unconstitutional.
Even though we Americans have lost an incredible amount of rights in the past few weeks alone, it almost seems like a beginning, not an end. The Court will come for Workers Rights, Trans Rights, the right to vote, and literally whatever else their billionaire theocratic patrons want. First, they need to make sure that Republicans will be able to rule indefinitely with only a rump minority support in this broken constitutional Republic hellscape we now find ourselves in.
