What is the most meaningful act of political participation? In a democracy, it can be easy to think that voting is the end all be all of engaging in political life, but that could not be further from the truth. Voting is a thing you do every few years, but building power to win those elections, and forming the bonds of solidarity needed to build community power need to happen every day, not every once in a while.

The fact that voting rights were not enshrined into law by a Democratically controlled House, Senate, and Presidency is shameful, however it has given us some hope to see the recent action against climate change recently pass the Senate. While some might be quick to give credit for this to the Joes, whether it be Manchin or Biden, the actual reason this bill passed is that there were enough people organized around this issue that they were able to make something happen. This despite politicians being more interested in stuffing their pockets with money while they shove their heads into the sand.

That is how change happens in society, especially in a democracy. Slowly at first and then, all at once. As we build power, the establishment will have no choice but to accede to some of our demands.
