21:04Now PlayingWhen it comes to climate change, there are very few easy fixes. But there are a few things we can do right now to increase our chances of limiting global temperature rise past the 1.5 degrees celsius of warming that’s basically already locked in. Like, dropping debt. That’s right. To discuss, Francesca was joined by Esteban Servat, an Argentinian biologist, environmental activist, and organizer with the Debt for Climate campaign.
One thing wealthy countries could do to stop climate change is to cancel the debt of so-called “developing nations,” freeing these governments economically to invest in their environments and people without being worried about first paying back London or New York based neocolonial entities. It also allows them to break the extractive model of their economy: ending fossil fuel exploitation or mining. The very fact that these countries have debt in the first place is a necessary condition for the style of neocolonial the West has been practicing since the decolonial movement of the late 20th century.
This debt allows policymakers sitting in European and American capitals to continue the systems of resource extraction and suppression of local industry that keeps them wealthy and these debtor nations impoverished and without agency. Without it, these nations will be free (for the first time in history) to pursue the policies we all need in order to slow the rising tide of global weather/environmental crises.
