This past week, the right wing in the United States has lost its mind about something that can only be described as a positive (but downright incremental) step; student debt cancellation up to $10,000.
About 43 million Americans have student loan debt, totaling nearly $1.75 trillion, with the average student loan debtor holding $37,667 in loans. These are loans that must be repaid to the government, who is actually making a profit due to the high interest rates these loans accrue. And funnily enough, it’s the only type of debt you cannot discard in bankruptcy… you know what Trump and Alex Jones are good at doing. For decades now, the government has been profiting off the education of its people, which is a completely bananas idea in literally any other advanced country on the planet. Thankfully, Biden has seen a bit of the light.
The majority of Americans also support student debt relief across the ideological spectrum, however plenty of Republicans are mad because Biden is the guy who pulled the trigger on this. Debt relief won’t impact anyone except those with debt. Your taxes won’t go up, and there are still tens of millions of Americans with plenty more student debt to pay off, so the question we’ve got is: why are you mad, bro?
