If you’ve been paying attention to the extremism of American conservatives, you might think that the greatest threat to the United States is “drag queen story hour”. Why are they so upset by a group of consenting parents reading to children while dressed in drag? Should we also get mad during Easter when someone dressed as a bunny reads “Here Comes Peter CottonTail”?
The folks with an axe to grind over drag shows are usually the first ones to say “but my personal freedoms” when someone challenges a part of their own lives. For these conservatives, personal freedom only applies to themselves, their own lives, and their own activities. When someone else wants to use that same autonomy to do something outside the tiny window of cultural norms these folks have, suddenly conservatives are being oppressed. And you can’t be oppressed by someone with such fabulous makeup, hunny.
