Republicans Eat Their Own As Speaker Ousted

Kevin McCarthy is out of here!

After nearly shutting down the government earlier this week, the GOP has now ousted their Speaker of the House. Eight Republicans joined every Democrat in a historic 216-210 vote to vacate the seat. The pushed headed by Florida congressman Matt Gaetz attacking McCarthy for working with Democrats to pass a short-term spending deal to avert a government shutdown.

Gaetz has also accused McCarthy of making a "secret side deal" with President Biden on Ukraine aid. McCarthy has been previously attacked over his critical view of Jan 6th and former President Trump. Following the attack on the Capitol, Representative Kevin McCarthy named Trump as responsible for the insurrection and said “I’ve had it with this guy.”

As the Republicans begin to rally around Trump again for 2024, it seemed that McCarthy had not "fulfilled his promises" to conservatives, according to Gaetz. That faction of the GOP tried to initially block McCarthy’s election to the position earlier this year, saying he couldn’t be trusted.

During Tuesday's debate, Republicans supporting Rep. McCarthy said that a vote to vacate the speaker could "plunge [the House] into chaos." However, Gaetz responded: "Chaos is Speaker McCarthy. Chaos is somebody who we cannot trust with their word."

What happens next? We’ll keep our eyes on the next possible shutdown in just 45 days.
