"No one’s child should be attacked simply because of their identity. Our children, Palestinian children, like everyone else, deserve to feel safe.” Those are the words of the families of three young men who were shot in Vermont over Thanksgiving.
Kinnan Abdalhamid is one of the three Palestinian-American 20-year-olds who were shot in Burlington Vermont last week. Two of the victims were wearing keffiyehs and speaking a mix of Arabic and English when they were attacked. An investigation, including whether or not this is a hate crime is “ongoing." One of the victims currently has a bullet lodged in his spine and may never walk again.
According to ATF agents, the shooter, 48, allegedly told law enforcement, ‘I’ve been waiting for you.’ We have reason to believe that the shooter was also involved in fringe and right-wing ideologies. According to reporting by Vice and others of course, he also shared anti-vaxx sentiments on social media. He was also involved in Boy Scouts and at least three troubled teen wilderness schools. He has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and has pleaded not guilty.
At a vigil at Brown University, where one of the boys studied, a professor read a statement written by the victim. "Had I been shot in the West Bank, where I grew up, the medical services which saved my life here would have likely been withheld by the Israeli army. The soldier who would have shot me would go home and never be convicted."
