7:49Now PlayingA 200-person town in deep-red Nebraska just lost its only hospital. The congressman who represents them didn't just vote for the bill that did it — he bragged that he helped write it.
Curtis Medical Center served southwest Nebraska for over 30 years. In July 2025, its parent system announced it was winding down — citing inflation and "anticipated" federal Medicaid cuts from the "One Big Beautiful Bill," signed July 4, 2025. That bill pulled $911 billion out of Medicaid over ten years and set up a $50 billion rural health fund to cover $137 billion in rural cuts — about 37 cents on the dollar.
Congressman Adrian Smith (NE-03) says he "supported and helped draft" the bill. A year later, a Democratic challenger, Becky Stille, is running at him on exactly this. Curtis still doesn't have a hospital.
