They fought.
Roberto Orozco-Ramirez has been Froid's diesel mechanic for over a decade. In January, Border Patrol arrested him on an illegal re-entry charge. That criminal charge was dropped in April — and the government kept him locked up anyway, on civil immigration detention, until a federal judge in Great Falls ruled the continued detention unlawful and ordered him released after more than 100 days.
More than a dozen Froid residents drove seven hours each way to stand for him. The crackdown was sold as going after "the worst of the worst." In Froid, it grabbed the town mechanic, failed to make the charge stick, and held him anyway. The town found out what it voted for — and the lucky part is they didn't like the answer.
