Crazy Woman Transitions from Calm to Chaos During DWI Arrest

Around 11:01 PM on August 1, 2025, Patrolman Amy Beringer with the Monmouth Beach Police Department was working at a DWI checkpoint in the vicinity of 128 Ocean Avenue. While there was conspicuous signage indicating that U-turns were prohibited, she observed the driver of a gray 2025 Hyundai Sonata make an illegal U-turn from the southbound lane and continue northbound into Sea Bright. Patrolwoman Beringer activated her emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, and the driver pulled over in the vicinity of Ocean Avenue and Imbrie Place. She then exited her patrol car and made contact with the driver, who was identified as Samantha Abruzzo-Delmauro.

As she approached Samantha, she detected the odor of alcohol and observed indicators of impairment. Samantha initially had trouble locating all her documents, and she told the officer that she was coming from Rooney’s Oceanfront Restaurant in Long Branch. She initially denied consuming any alcohol, before later admitting to having 1 glass of wine earlier that evening. Patrolwoman Beringer then returned to her patrol car to check her license. Based on her suspicion of impairment, Samantha was eventually asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises.

The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Patrolwoman Beringer observed the lack of smooth pursuit, but she could not make any other observations because Samantha was not cooperative. The following exercise was the Walk and Turn test. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. Samantha failed to follow instructions during both of these tests as well.

Based on her traffic infraction, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier that evening, and her inability to satisfactorily complete the field sobriety exercises, Samantha was told to exit the vehicle because she was going to be placed under arrest for DWI. At this time, Samantha became uncooperative and refused to exit the vehicle. Despite multiple attempts, Samantha refused to cooperate so she had to be forcibly removed from the vehicle. After a brief struggle, Samantha was eventually placed inside the patrol car. Her vehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to John’s Law, while Patrolwoman Beringer transported Samantha to the Monmouth Beach Police Department for further processing.

At the station, the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators was read to her, and she agreed to submit breath samples. Her Alcotest results indicated a BAC level of 0.047%, which was above 0.00% but below the legal limit of 0.08%. After they finished processing Samantha, she was released a sober adult pending her court appearance after they signed the Potential Liability Warning on Samantha’s behalf.

Patrolwoman Beringer issued Samantha the following traffic tickets:

-Operating under the influence (39:4-50)

-Reckless driving (39:4-96)

-Careless driving (39:4-97)

-Improper U-turn (39:4-125)

She was also criminally charged with Resisting Arrest (2C:29-2A(1)).

Prior to this arrest, Samantha had received a citation for Careless Driving in West Long Branch, New Jersey on July 18, 2025. This was preceded by another citation for driving with an expired license in Long Branch, New Jersey on July 14, 2025. She had also received yet another citation for driving with an expired license in Little Silver, New Jersey on July 1, 2025.

Following this arrest, Samantha received another citation for Careless Driving (39:4-97) in Long Branch, New Jersey on September 25, 2025. Samantha was later arrested again on allegations of stalking (2C:12-10B) and harassment (2C:33-4C) in Oceanport, New Jersey on October 22, 2025.
