We’ve all had our good and bad bosses. But when you think about your favorite bosses, what did they all have in common? Joining Shay Sayss today to discuss this with Dr. Jennifer Wisdom, a leadership expert with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.
What qualities make a good leader?
Self-awareness is key. You need to know your own weaknesses and strengths. You also need to be empathic and understand what is going on with people on and off your team. Of course, you also need to have a vision for what you want to accomplish. However, a vision by itself isn’t enough. A leader needs to know what it will take to reach their goals and be able to give practical supervision and assistance so that they can reach them.
How do you get the confidence to take charge in your personal and professional life?
A leader needs to continue to challenge themselves and push themselves. Most importantly, they need to ask for specific criticism and feedback to learn from that criticism and never stop learning and growing.
Dr. Wilson is also the author of “Millennial Guide to Management and Leadership” and says that many Gen Xers and Baby Boomers believe that Millennials are very confident. But why is there a difference in the level of confidence between the different generations?
Dr. Wilson thinks that when Millennials were kids there was an emphasis on boosting self-esteem, which some believe went too far. She believes that Millennials are ready to be leaders and are extremely resilient, because they had to live through 9/11, a recession and now a pandemic.
Millennials are team-oriented, want their team to feel good while they are working and are invested in social good.
What tips would Dr. Wisdom give a young person wanting to be a leader?
Ask as many questions as you can. If you ask leaders what they wish they learned earlier, you can learn to not make those same mistakes and go farther than they were ever able to.
