In the world of golf, there is a lot of drama right now.
The League Commissioner punished some of the PGA's top names, including Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, and Bryson Dechambeau, for competing in the newly founded rival LIV Golf tournament.
Although it may not appear to be a major concern for a group of golfers to compete in a different tournament than normal, the situation is a little more complicated.
Saudi Arabia's public investment fund is financing the LIV tournament. The PGA suspended 17 golfers who were previously on the tour once it was revealed who was competing in the tournament.
So, why would some of golf's best names abandon the PGA for a rival organization financed by Saudi Arabia? Money, of course.
The LIV pays significantly more than the PGA. The first event's purse was $25 million, making it the largest in golf history. And the winner, Charl Schwartzel, took home a whopping $4.75 million. Even the last-place golfer took home $120,000 from the tournament.
To put that in perspective, that's more than double the 2.7 million Justin Thomas received for winning the PGA Championship. The last-place golfer usually receives between $10,000 and $14,000.
And golfers who competed in the LIV tournament have faced a torrent of negative publicity in addition to being suspended from the PGA, but they might earn up to ten times their money by switching.
