2:23Now PlayingWelcome back to The Foreign Desk. Here are five things to know this week. Queen Elizabeth the second's death. The United Kingdom's longest-serving monarch died at the age of 96 after raining for 70 years. News of the Queen's death sparked attention around the world as foreign leaders, celebrities and admirers praised the queen for her rule. The Queen's son, Charles III, has been proclaimed King, making him the oldest monarch to succeed the British throne at age 73. Queen Elizabeth's funeral will be held in London on Monday.
Two: The 21st anniversary of the 911 terror attacks. Americans are commemorating the deadliest terror attack on US soil after 21 years. President Joe Biden offered statements vowing that he would continue to root out terrorism. First Lady Joe Biden spoke at the third attack site near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, offering her tribute to the Americans who died on that day. Some are concerned, however, that the threat of Islamic terrorism still exists today as Al-Qaeda reemerges is in Afghanistan.
Three: a new US military testing facility in Saudi Arabia that's been announced by the US military to help deter the increasing threat of drone attacks from Iran and its terrorist proxies. The new site, called Red Sands Integrated Experimentation Center, will function as a training center to improve readiness between the Middle-East partners and the US, according to US Central Command. Why Saudi Arabia? Well, the Pentagon hopes the site will bring in more Arab countries to collaborate with the US and Israel.
Four: an Iranian cyber attack against Albania. Albania has blamed Iran's regime over a cyber attack linked to the Revolutionary Guard Corps back in July. In response to the attack, the Albanian government ordered the expulsion of all Iranian embassy staff, officially cutting diplomatic relations with Tehran. The Biden administration condemned Tehran for its actions, directing the Treasury Department to sanction Iran's spy agency for allegedly conducting the hacking attacks. Iran rejected the claims calling them baseless accusations.
And five: Russia pull back from Ukraine's car key region. Ukrainian forces broke through Russia's frontlines in the East, retaking strategic towns and territory in a surprise counter-offensive that began several days ago. According to reports from Ukrainian officials, Ukrainian forces have recaptured around 3000 square miles, including three strongholds held by Russia since the beginning of the invasion. Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised Ukraine’s forces calling for the West to continue its support.
