1:40Now PlayingThe IRS audited Americans earning less than $25,000 per year, at five times the rate of other groups last year. That's according to a study by Syracuse University. So the new projections that Americans earning less than $75,000 per year will receive 60% of the new tax audits makes perfect sense.
What they're not telling us is as early as next year, taxpayers earning less than $200,000 will see an increase of nearly $17 billion as a group. That's a tax aimed solely at low and middle-income workers. According to the Joint Committee on Taxation, a non-partisan watchdog group, about 80 to 90% of the additional 200 billion that the IRS hopes to collect will come from small businesses.
Why are they targeting small businesses when we thought they're going after the wealthy? Well, according to the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, the IRS will be forced to target small and medium-sized businesses because they're the ones who are not going to fight back. That's right. The IRS can try to go after the rich, but the rich have lawyers to fight back. That's why the poor are easier to pursue. So goes the reasoning. So what's the deal with all the changes?
President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 into law last month, which includes an $80 billion boost to the IRS over a 10-year period, and allows the agency to hire 87,000 new agents to help them crack down on tax evasion. So we're starting to peel back the layers to see how the Inflation Reduction Act will actually affect Americans. Are you going to be audited? Get the facts.
