In recent years the IRS has been auditing taxpayers making under 25 thousand a year, five times more than any other income group.
People claim this is happening because it’s much cheaper to go after low-income taxpayers than the ultra-rich, who can afford lawyers to fight back.
The issue lies in how the IRS audit process is structured. the IRS is set up to expend the least amount of resources to conduct the largest number of examinations possible.
And this is what really needs to change. the 87 thousand new agents will go after the most vulnerable Americans if these IRS policies don’t change.
We really need is for the IRS to change the way they operate and go after the people trying to evade the most taxes – and not chase lower-income people because it’s more efficient and cheaper.
And a lot of other stuff needs to change at the IRS. sadly, only 11 percent of people calling the IRS customer service made it through to an agent in 2021.
The IRS clearly needs reform – and just adding thousands of new agents isn’t going to solve its long-standing problems.
