And higher ed, in general, has gotten a whole lot worse since I graduated. Some say, and I agree, that there's a bubble that's about to pop. Today, let's face it, universities are bloated bureaucracies that resemble failing corporations.
At places like Yale, there are as many administrators as undergraduates, yikes. Meanwhile, college presidents get paid big bucks, while non-tenured faculty are treated like garbage.
Unions representing graduate assistants, like the one at UCLA, are striking for better conditions; enough is enough. And there's $1.6 trillion in student debt outstanding and ever-skyward tuition prices.
So people want to know, where is this money going? And that's where we find ourselves: a higher ed system that desperately needs reform.
