Beyond limited demand, there's a shortage of pilots and sky-high fuel prices. And all that's enough for airlines to call it quits on places where millions of Americans call home. These airplanes literally fly over these places.
As a result, the heartland is becoming detached from bi-coastal prosperity. They're becoming poorer and more politically extreme. And it all makes sense; If your state or region were in economic freefall, you might be more likely to vote for people promising some sort of alternative.
In a generation, if economic and migration trends continue, we're gonna see a hollowed-out Middle America, and that will be a huge problem for the country at large.
