Earlier this month, Boeing was forced to pay $2.5 Billion to settle criminal charges related to a 2018 and 2019 crash of its 767 airplanes. For a $230B company that’s a drop in the bucket for knowingly putting thousands of lives in danger and helping to kill 346 people. The Federal Government brought charges of criminal conspiracy to defraud the Federal Aviation Administration, as it knowingly hid defects and cut corners to boost profits and maintain production schedules.
According to NPR, “Under the terms of the deal, Boeing will pay a criminal penalty of $243.6 million, which is less than 10% of the $2.5 billion settlement. Most of the rest, $1.7 billion, will go to airlines that purchased 737 Max planes to compensate them for lost revenue during a lengthy grounding of the aircraft type while the cause of the crashes was investigated. Another $500 million will be paid into a fund to help compensate the families of those who were killed in the crashes.”
Boeing willingly deceived federal prosecutors, and all that’s happened is a slap on the wrist. The company claims that this was the result of two bad actors in the company, but we cannot individualize the problems of a multi-billion dollar company, and major arms dealers, to the actions of “bad actors.” Let’s be real, these are the fall guys for a company that was willing to let people die so that they could hit a higher quarterly profit margin.
