17:02Now PlayingAre distributing pamphlets, donating to bail funds, and helping with mutual aid the acts of criminal conspiracy?
According to a Georgia grand jury, yes they are. This September, 61 activists involved with the Defend The Forest or Stop Cop City movement were hit with RICO charges for their involvement in efforts to stop the Atlanta Police Foundation from building the largest police training facility in the United States.
Under Georgia's expansive Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, known as RICO, individuals can be charged with participated in a criminal enterprise. Dozens of people have also faced state domestic terrorism charges. “The domestic terrorism and RICO charges against protesters are meant to scare us,” a resident told the Intercept.
However, five Atlanta land defenders responded to the indictment by occupying the construction site. Additionally, they’ve turned in over 100,000 signatures from Atlanta residents to call for referendum on the issue.
When will politicians stand up against this political repression?
