What Do Americans Have to Do with Israel’s War?

Perhaps you’ve heard someone saying that people in the US have no skin in the game when it comes to condemning Israel’s attack on Gaza. You couldn’t be more wrong.

Each year the US sends at least 3 billion in military aid to the Israeli Defense Force. Now, Foreign Relations Committee, announced it will introduce a bill to give even more money to “help Israel defend itself.” Israel is the largest cumulative beneficiary of US foreign assistance since World War II, receiving nearly $160 billion in support, 80% of that money has been for the military.

Meanwhile, every year thousands of American police, ICE, border patrol, and FBI agents train in Israel. This deadly exchange is part of post-9/11 counter-terrorism efforts and are representative a shift in policing over the last few decades, which includes increasing surveillance specifically of Muslim communities and people of color and the use of military tactics and technologies.

Americans are saying enough is enough. On Monday, thousands of Jews and allies arrived at the White House to demand a ceasefire and over the weekend tens of thousands marched in cities like New York and San Francisco to demand an end to the genocide in Gaza.

Though the US cannot stop this war on our own, we can control whether our bombs, bullets, and military aid supports it.
