10:31Now PlayingLegally we do NOT have freedom of speech on social media platforms. So why do users think that we should?
Is there an ongoing challenge to define free speech in the internet landscape?
That’s the heated topic of today’s debate over at Millennial Minute, and moderating the debate is our host David Grasso who is joined by Autry Pruitt, CEO of New Journey PAC, and Nate Lerner, Executive Director of Build The Wave.
Pruitt says that the question is not about freedom of speech, the question is about whether or not you have a right to operate your business using a platform. This is very similar to the idea of land owning and leasing. If you violate a lease, the landlord cannot simply kick you off without due process.
The same goes for the deplatforming of the Parler app, which was acting on digital land. Parler had built an entire infrastructure and that it isn’t right for the “digital landlord” to remove them without due process. We abandoned that in real estate hundreds of years ago, we must do that with digital land now.
Lerner says that there is a difference between people who own actual land vs someone on the internet. The internet is a notoriously free and open place where private companies can operate pretty much however they like, with no international internet law requiring Facebook or Twitter, for instance, to follow any sort of guidelines.
Their duty is to their stockholders/shareholders, and not to the public at large. When you use their site you agree to their terms of service, including agreeing to being removed if you violate their terms of service.
What do you think about what they have to say? Where do you stand in the debate for internet freedom of speech? Let us know in the comments!
