Today’s question: should minimum wage workers make $15 an hour?
To help us with this we brought in two friends of Bold, political strategist Ajay Bruno, and Democratic strategist Nicole Brener Schmitz.
Bruno starts off by saying that those who have minimum wage jobs should be working towards higher paid jobs anyway. He also stresses that we need to understand that if we want to raise it to $15 by 2025, with inflation it’s going to catch up really quickly. And these jobs should be for those of a younger generation, anyway. If older people have these jobs, that’s evident of a bigger issue that needs to be solved in our economy. And while some may argue automation won’t come from it, higher pay for minimum wage workers would definitely motivate businesses to find ways to eliminate workers through automated means faster than they already are.
Schmitz says that there shouldn’t be shame in wanting to work 40 hours a week to provide food for your family. She also says that automation isn’t a direct result of raising the minimum wage. Furthermore she states that it shouldn't be called a minimum wage, and should be referred to as a livable wage. There shouldn’t be an issue trying to give citizens of a country a livable wage when they have to work 40 hours a week.
Though they didn’t agree on everything, they both stressed important issues surrounding minimum wage workers.
