Ransomware attacks have been happening to American companies much more recently, and it can be tough to really understand what’s happening. To get an idea of how these ransomware attacks work, we’re talking to an expert.

Today, Philip is joined by Mark Stamford, cybersecurity expert and Founder of OccamSec and he’s here to tell us more about what happened with these ransomware attacks, and give us cybersecurity tips on how we can defend ourselves against ransomware and other cyber attacks.

What is ransomware and why are ransomware attacks happening?

Mark Stamford says that simply, these are a great way to make money. The bad guys are charging a ransom for their infiltrations. Also, these bad guys are taking data out of these networks, and are able to charge a ransom to give the data back.

When did ransomware begin? How does ransomware work?

We’ve seen the computer virus for a very long time, for about as long as you’ve been able to own a computer, you’ve been able to download a computer virus. Over time we’ve seen computers evolve and with that the evolution of the computer virus. Also, companies are so reliant on technology nowadays, so now your organization won’t operate if the computers don’t operate. As such it makes ransomware and computer viruses so dangerous, and the need for cybersecurity so important.

Computers also have weaknesses, and the regular updates that your programming gets are meant to fix the weaknesses the bad guys can use to get into your computer.

What can companies do to protect themselves?

According to Mark Stamford, the traditional idea is just to layer defense on defense. But the problem in cyber security is that if there’s one weakness, it’s going to weaken the entire structure regardless of how many defense layers you put in place. As such we need to move away from this textbook way of cyber security, and come up with some new ideas.

What did you think of these cybersecurity tips and the current ransomware attacks? Do you have any advice on cyber security? Let us know in the comments below!
