And here are their points of view: liberals say the IRS needs new funding to go after rich taxpayers and make them pay their fair share, especially since the IRS has shrunk dramatically in recent years. Right now, the agency is very understaffed and needs resources to build it back up. Facts back up these claims.
Still, conservatives say that the IRS has been auditing low-and-middle-income earners at higher rates than any other income group. And this accusation is also true. It turns out that people who don't have fancy accountants or resources to fight back pay up faster than anyone else.
Conservatives worry that giving the IRS more resources will weaponize the agency to keep on going after regular folks. Here's the problem: Both liberals and conservatives make valid points about the IRS.
With a massive trillion-dollar deficit yearly, the government needs more money or needs to cut spending. And, unfortunately, someone somewhere will have to pay up.
