9:17Now PlayingHave you seen a school bookshelf in Florida lately? HB 1467, an act which requires “curriculum transparency” in schools, recently went into effect and the results have left teachers without one particular supply: books. This act mandates that school books be “age appropriate, free from pornography and suited to student needs” according to the Washington Post.
The Florida Department of Education released new guidance in mid-January that clarified an earlier book ban which had only applied to school libraries, not teachers’ classroom libraries. In the wake of this, the Department is asking for volunteers to vet each teacher’s book collection, even though it was a qualified professional who put each collection together, and often did so through fundraising and even personal spending.
