The average American undergrad leaves school with over $30K in student loan debt, more than any other generation.
So, the question is, should you go to college? Is college worth it in 2021? Is college still necessary?
Less than a generation ago, going to college was a basic right of passage after high school. And anyone without a college degree was seen as inferior in the job market, and destined for a low level career with limited wages and zero opportunity for growth.
Today, tech companies are led by now famous billionaire college dropouts, and tuition costs are continuing to rise faster than inflation. So it’s really hard to push the narrative that college is the only way to go.
With all of the money that schools are getting these days, they should be investing in a curriculum that's preparing their students for the job market. Career-oriented classes, courses that focus on financial literacy, and robust internship programs and networking opportunities are really what college students need. Instead, student quality hasn’t changed, professors wages are stagnant, and students graduate with no real career prospects.
This leaves many people wondering about the return on investment for a college degree. Is it necessary for my career path? Are there other college alternatives? Do I need to put myself in student loan debt?
In the end, you really should explore all avenues and avoid high levels of student loan debt that limit your ability to thrive.
