Biden Went To G20
G20 is when the world’s 20 largest economies meet to discuss the latest security, political, and economic issues. The meeting was pretty unremarkable. One thing that came out of the meeting was an agreement to get rid of steel and aluminum tariffs and to get rid of the global corporate minimum tax. This is what allows major companies to stash their money abroad in offshore accounts and often evade taxes. Biden also met with the Pope where the Pope told Biden regardless of his stance on abortion he should be allowed to receive communion. This is after Catholic bishops in the US wouldn’t give Biden communion because he was pro-choice. Biden also met with the Turkish president Erdogan. This is after Erdogan threatened to expel ten ambassadors who asked for the release of a political prisoner.
COP26 Climate Change Summit
Leaders of over 100 countries are attending a climate change conference in Glasgow, Scotland called COP26. Many experts believe the summit is our ‘last best hope’ to address global warming. There were some positive outcomes like 110 leaders, including Brazil’s president, pledged to end deforestation by 2030. That’s nice but there’s a lot of trees you can cut until then so it doesn’t seem fast enough for a crisis. In addition, 105 leaders pledged to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. This is good because methane is a lot more destructive to our planet than carbon dioxide is. In other news, India pledged to meet net zero carbon emissions by 2070, and Jeff Bezos said he would donate $2 billion to help restore nature. And finally, more than 40 nations have agreed to shift away from coal, which is the single biggest contributor to climate change except for China and the US who are the world’s biggest coal-dependent countries didn’t sign up for this agreement.
Ethiopia Update
The Ethiopian government and its prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, called on the country’s civilians to arm themselves and defend Ethiopia’s capital after forces they’ve been fighting against captured two towns nearby. This is somewhat odd since Abiy Ahmed won the Nobel Peace Prize two years ago by making peace with Ethiopia’s neighbor Eritrea.
