12:19Now PlayingBerlin Blockade and Berlin Air Lift were major events in Cold War history. In fact, Berlin Blockade was the first event of the Cold War. After the second world war, Germany was divided into four zones of occupation. The eastern zone came in the part of the Soviet Union. With the eastern part of Germany, Berlin the capital of Germany also came in this zone. To administer the whole country, Berlin was also divided into four occupied zones and again Russia got the eastern part of Berlin. Russia applied a communist form of Government in its zone and Allied countries which included the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and France applied a capitalist form of government in their western zone. Due to prosperity and due to economic advantages in the western zone many in East Germany started to migrate into the western part of Germany. This is clear from the fact that from 1949-1962 some 2.5 million people migrated from East Germany to West Germany through west berlin. Many of them were professionals and skilled men. Also, allied countries brought new currency in a western zone which devalued the currency in the eastern zone. Allied countries also unified west Germany. The Soviet Union was not interested in the unification of Germany because twice Russia was hit by Germany in the past. To stop all this Soviet Union applied Berlin Blockade in which western was not allowed to enter into their western zone.
To counter this, allied countries started airlift. More than 200,000 flights flew to west berlin in one year. They all carried more than 2.3 million tons to goods to west berlin. Soviet initially thought that lift would be temporary but it remains for one air. Initially, Russia also thought that the people of West berlin due to starvation would leave their allies and in this way Berlin could become part of East Germany. But in the end all in vain. The blockade was started in Jun 24, 1948, and it ended on May 12, 1949. Berlin Blockade and airlift was a major event of the Cold War in which there was a little possibility of direct confrontation.
