We spoke with journalist Liza Featherstone about how the NYC Democratic Socialists fought to win the biggest bill addressing climate change in US history, the Build Public Renewables Act. How did they do it? By not being afraid to call out the people and powerbrokers in their way.
New York state’s economy is the tenth largest in the world, this legislation will help bring working class control to the behemoth system that is the state energy system. The BPRA will shut down fracked gas power plants that pollute marginalized communities and provide lower utility bills for those who need them most. Socialists also collaborated with the state’s AFL-CIO, to create an Office of Just Transition to create green union jobs.
The NY-DSA orchestrated a wonderful ‘inside-outside’ strategy here, utilizing their share of electeds in office to advocate within the halls while also building public pressure campaigns from activists.
Further, unlike other toothless climate bills that advocate for deadlines (ex: carbon free by 2040) this bill actually helps the state achieve those goals by making the state build the renewable energy infrastructure needed.
With the federal government stalling on climate justice, it's time for states to take action.
