West received $3,300 from Crow in August, according to his public filing with the Federal Election Commission, before he announced he was running as an independent in 2024.
Harlan Crow is a billionaire who's no stranger to scandal. He's so rich that his yacht has a helicopter pad, and his house is so big it has its own zip code. But, despite all his extravagance, he's had a few missteps, like paying off Supreme Court justices, owning paintings by Adolf Hitler, a signed copy of Mein Kampf, and a set of swastika-emblazoned napkins in the name of ‘collecting.’
So, why on earth would Cornel West accept a donation from someone like Harlan Crow? Well, according to sources close to the campaign, it's all part of West's strategy to appeal to all corners of the electorate. "We're not just after the 1%," West explained, "We're also after the 1%.”
Crow has described West as "a good friend" and West said he has known Crow in a "non-political setting for some years" despite his "deep political differences." West eventually gave back the donation after criticism.
