Should EBT Only Be For Healthy Food? 🍎

As we face the country’s current unemployment rate, we are seeing a record number of Americans requiring government assistance from programs such as SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps.

But should these programs for food stamps be allowed only for healthy food? This is an important issue we made sure we discussed.

For this Millennial Minute, host David Grasso moderates a debate between Nia Miranda, Activist and Founder of Bringing Love Back, and political strategist Ajay Bruno and looks at a recent tweet from Keke Palmer which led to a discussion on Twitter about the importance of access to healthy foods for underserved communities that rely on SNAP.

Bruno says here that if the majority of your diet is unhealthy food you are more likely to get sick, especially during a pandemic, and if you’re using EBT you’re also most likely using government assisted health insurance. And if that’s the case then the situation is only causing the government to spend more money.

Miranda believes that saying that is ignoring an even greater issue, to reference Keke Palmer’s tweet. Miranda states that the greater issue is there is a lack of grocery stores and farmers markets in communities that rely on food stamps. And if a community was given the option to purchase healthy food, due to the close vicinity of a grocery store, then they are more likely to do so.
