Over at Bold, we wanted to make sure we discussed the serious issue of the unemployment rates among Black Americans. To find an answer, we asked the experts.
Bold’s host Philip Michael is joined by Leslie Short, Founder, President & CEO of The CavuGroup, and Kyle Horn, Founder of America’s Job Honor Awards, to discuss why this is happening, and what steps need to be taken to level the playing field for black jobseekers.
Shorts says that, simply, you have to look outside your circle. If you don’t look past your neighborhood or what you’re comfortable with then you are going to end up getting the same people for the same job. It takes work.
She further proposes the question, “Who’s in the room?” Representation should be at all levels of your company, from the mailroom to the boardroom.
Horn completely agrees, and states that due to the disproportionate impact that America’s criminal justice system has on minorities, no company’s diversity equity and inclusion program is complete without first taking a look at how they can level the playing field in terms of Americans returning from prison.
How can these necessary steps be integrated into new companies in 2021?
Shorts says it all begins with leadership. If leadership understands diversity in all levels of their company, it will benefit their bottom dollar.
