Facebook is undergoing a rebrand. Its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg says he wants Facebook to become a metaverse company. Just last week he announced that Facebook will be changing its name to Meta, a metaverse company. The CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey had something to say about this. Jack Dorsey called Mark Zuckerberg’s vision dystopian.
What is a metaverse? The Metaverse is an idea for a future version of the internet where instead of using laptops and phones to get online, people use virtual reality and augmented reality devices to enter a virtual space. The term metaverse was coined by Neal Stephenson, the author of ‘Snow Crash.' It originally described a virtual world owned by corporations where users were treated as citizens in a dystopian corporate dictatorship.
These criticisms are not stopping Mark Zuckerberg. He plans to hire 10,000 people in Europe over the next five years to build this metaverse. Is the metaverse a scary dystopian ideal or is it kind of cool?
Before Facebook, we had Myspace, which ushered in this era of connectivity worldwide. Myspace, Facebook, and all these other social media, made it possible to connect with people instantaneously regardless of what part of the world they lived in. This is just the evolution of how we communicate in the digital world.
Then it evolved into dating with apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, and these are a virtual equivalent of a bar. This metaverse seems to be an extension of that with people talking to each other within this virtual universe. We don’t know for sure that Mark Zuckerberg will be successful with this metaverse but if he is, it is simply a function of innovation. It is a convergence of the physical and virtual realities.
