With the rise of social media, younger generations are feeling more pressure than ever to be up to date in the latest fashion trends, whether it’s scarves, shirts, butterfly clips, or anything else.

Brands like Zara and Shein are two examples of companies leading these trends. Zara and Shein’s impact are even larger thanks to the internet and social media.

Shein is the largest retailer in the world without a physical store. Shein skyrocketed into popularity thanks to TikTok. Shein has a massive following on TikTok.

How are they damaging the environment? Thanks to social media, there are more and more fashion trends and more and more of them grow and fall in popularity at a quicker rate. Due to this quick turnaround, many of these brands use cheaper and/or low-quality materials.

With these quick changes, more and more clothes are thrown away and they end up in landfills. In the past 20 years, the amount of clothes thrown out by Americans has doubled! With more clothes in landfills, not only are we wasting money and throwing out clothing, it can take up to 200 years for textile waste to decompose completely.

What can you do? Stop buying fast fashion. Instead, buy from sustainable brands or thrift stores allows you to reduce your impact on Fast Fashion.

Do you try to donate your clothes instead of throwing them out? Let us know in the comments below!
